AAUW-Anacortes Branch Book Talk
For the last 35 years, one of our general meetings has been a ‘book talk’. Skagit Valley College librarian Linda Hendrick leads this unique and popular event. Each year a different topic is selected by Linda and members are asked to read a book on that topic. At the meeting, Linda provides a hand-out with information on the topic, including a bibliography, and each hand-out has a different quote on the topic. Members are asked to read their quote before talking about their book. Topics in the past have included: family, gardening, autobiographies, mysteries, humor and cookbooks.
Annual March STEM Program
Since 2009 we have had our March meeting dedicated to the three Anacortes High School senior girls honored by the Washington State STEM Scholar Recognition Program. Awards are granted to girls achieving in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. In addition to the presentation of the Washington State certificate and scholar pins, the girls receive a small gift and a scholarship. Our featured speaker is a woman presently working in a field of science, technology, engineering or mathematics who discusses her career and her career path.
December Holiday Party
Our general meeting in December is dedicated to celebrating the holiday season. Members, spouses and guests gather for this festive occasion for dinner, music, entertainment and socializing.
Once a year we devote one special socializer to raising funds for the National LAF (Legal Advocacy Fund). The 2014 fundraiser was a wonderful barbecue at a member’s lovely garden home with perfect weather!
