AAUW-Anacortes Branch Book Talk
For the last 35 years, one of our general meetings has been a ‘book talk’. Skagit Valley College Librarian, Linda Hendrick, leads this unique and popular event. Each year a different topic is selected by Linda and members are asked to read a book on that topic. At the meeting, Linda provides a hand-out with information on the topic, including a bibliography, and each hand-out has a different quote on the topic. Members are asked to read their quote before talking about their book. Topics in the past have included: family, gardening, autobiographies, mysteries, humor and cookbooks.
Annual March STEM Program
Our March meeting is dedicated to the three Anacortes High School senior girls honored by the Washington State STEM Scholar Recognition Program. Awards are granted to girls achieving in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. In addition to the presentation of the Washington State certificate and scholar pins, the girls receive a small gift and a scholarship. Our featured speaker is a woman presently working in a field of science, technology, engineering or mathematics who discusses her career and her career path.
December Holiday Party
Our general meeting in December is dedicated to celebrating the holiday season. Members, spouses and guests gather for this festive occasion for dinner, music, entertainment and socializing.
Jingle Bell Dash
The annual Jingle Bell Dash now includes a 10K version as well as the traditional 5K and Kids’ Dash to Santa. This year, the courses will be USA Track & Field (USATF) certified. This event has been established to develop sustainable funding for our STEM programs, including 8th and 12th grade awards and Tech Trek summer camp. It’s a fun community event to develop more community awareness of AAUW and what we do. Additionally, the Kids Dash to Santa will raise non-perishable food items for the Salvation Army food bank in Anacortes.

Spring Scholarship Fundraiser
Our annual scholarship fundraiser occurs in March or April. Reminiscent of the very first meeting of university women back in 1881 when it all got started, this is a Tea with savories and sweets and, of course, tea – also coffee and occasionally lemonade. We feature a guest speaker on a topic of local interest in addition to honoring some of our former scholarship recipients.
Tote Bag Fundraiser
Attractive grocery/tote bags made from recycled plastic bottles are for sale exclusively at The Market for $8 each. They will also be available at our AAUW General Meetings and the twice-a-year AAUW Booth at the Farmer’s Market. The bags feature full-color scenic photos from the Anacortes area and logos from business sponsors. The goal is to raise scholarship money for local women who are continuing their studies in an undergraduate, graduate or technical degree program. You can support this worthy cause by buying these attractive bags for yourself or friends!
Once a year we devote one special social event to raising funds for the National LAF (Legal Advocacy Fund). Our most recent fundraiser was a wonderful barbecue at a member’s lovely garden home with perfect weather!
