AAUW Meetings
AAUW Meeting – Thursday, February 8, 2018 |
Our February meeting will be a panel discussion of Title IX and its impact on educational programs and activities. For one time only we will meet at the Anacortes Senior Activity Center, with hospitality at 6:45 pm and the program at 7:00 pm.
Panelists are Cynthia Simonsen from the Anacortes School District, David Forsythe from the NW Educational Service District, and community activist Kathy Reim. Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits sex discrimination in all aspects of education, including sexual and gender-based harassment and assault, access to course offerings, career and technical education, admissions, housing, student health services, financial assistance, and athletics.
Annual Business Meeting
The AAUW-Anacortes Business Meeting will be held at 6:00 P.M. at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1300 9th Street, Fellowship Hall. Enter from alley (elevator available).
Following a potluck dinner, we hold our Annual Business Meeting and election and installation of officers. There will be a slide show loop of photos from the 2014/2015 year of activities – don’t miss it! Bring your 2015-16 dues check (save a stamp)! You probably don’t know that our Treasurer must submit these prior to July 1st. Help us be on time!
Spring Fundraising Event
The Annual AAUW-Anacortes Spring Fundraising Event will be held on Saturday, March 24, at 2:00 P.M. at the Anacortes Senior Activity Center, 1701 22nd Street.
The annual fundraiser features a guest speaker(s), former AAUW-Anacortes scholarship winners, and a buffet of sweets and savories provided by our members. Please mark your calendar for this special event and check back for further details.

General Meeting – Annual STEM Awards Presentation
The AAUW-Anacortes General Meeting will be held at 9:30 A.M. at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1300 9th Street, Fellowship Hall. Enter from alley (elevator available).
This is our Annual Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) presentation where scholarships will be awarded to Anacortes High School senior girls and features a guest speaker active in her STEM field. This year’s guest speaker is Rebecca Norlander. Rebecca is a computer science graduate and distinguished alumna from Boston University. She currently runs her own technology company, and throughout her professional life, has actively encouraged and supported girls and women to pursue technical careers.
Please join us to congratulate the STEM recipients and learn more about Rebecca’s remarkable career and accomplishments!
Annual Writer’s Forum
The Annual Anacortes AAUW Writers’ Forum will be held at 1:00 P.M. in the large meeting room at the Anacortes Public Library.
This year’s topic is “The Sea”, and will provide an interesting session as we hear how the sea has fascinated and inspired our wonderful panel of writers including the following:
- Reanne Hemingway Douglas – author of Cape Horn: One Man’s Dream: One Woman’s Nightmare
- Wendy Lyn Clark – author of San Juan Island Stories Anthology and Fatty Patty: a Romantic Short Story
- Sandra Pollary – author of Puget Sound Whales for Sale: the Fight to End Orca Hunting

- Topic: Volunteer Opportunities in Our Schools
Many opportunities exist for parents, grandparents, students, and community members to volunteer time and skills to assist the school district. Jayne will cover basic volunteer guidelines and review current school volunteer opportunities. Come and hear how you or someone you know can dedicate your time and talents to help our schools meet the needs of our students.
